About GrooveSteps

GrooveSteps is a free hub of interactive, browser-based music tools — built so anyone can go from their first drum lesson to their first finished beat without installing anything or paying a cent.

What we make

GrooveSteps brings two free music studios under one roof, both running entirely in your web browser:

Why it's free

Every tool is free with no account and no paywall. GrooveSteps is supported by unobtrusive display advertising, which lets us keep the tools open to everyone, including students and hobbyists who'd never pay for a DAW just to try an idea.

How the tools work (and where AI fits)

The drum tools are built on the browser's native Web Audio engine — sounds are synthesized and scheduled locally on your device, so they work offline and respond in real time. The Studio's sequencer uses AI assistance to suggest and fill rhythmic patterns; you stay in control of every step, and nothing you make is required to leave your browser. We disclose this because we think people deserve to know how the thing they're using actually works.

Who's behind GrooveSteps

GrooveSteps is built and maintained by ThatDeveloperGuy, an independent web-development studio. We build the tools, run the servers, and answer the email. Questions, bugs, or feature ideas are genuinely welcome — get in touch.

Who built GrooveSteps

GrooveSteps is designed, built, and maintained by Joseph Anady, founder of ThatDeveloperGuy. Joseph wrote the real-time Web Audio drum engine, the timing-and-scoring system that grades your playing, and the AI step sequencer behind the Studio. Every tool here is first-hand work, not a white-labeled template — when something breaks, the person who built it answers the email.

Joseph holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering and an M.S. in Cybersecurity and builds browser-based software for a living. GrooveSteps grew out of a simple idea: the tools to learn an instrument and make music should be free, fast, and open to anyone with a browser.

How the learning content is made

GrooveSteps pairs programmed drum patterns with explanations, count tables and practice exercises. Pattern tables are generated from the same note data as the playable example, so readers can check the rhythm even without audio. The sound examples are synthesized in the browser; they are not recordings by the artists referenced in style names.

The rudiment pages provide hand-order practice and link to the Percussive Arts Society for standard notation. An even-step grid cannot demonstrate every grace note, rebound, accent or expressive detail. Keyboard timing scores describe input timing, not a professional assessment of instrumental technique.

Practice guidance is maintained as part of the site. If a note, explanation or count is wrong, report the page and the specific issue. Corrections should improve the exercise, rather than add unsupported claims about authors, endorsements or results.

Advertising and support

Optional advertising on reading and learning pages and voluntary donations help support the free tools. Advertisements are separate from practice controls and are not endorsements. You can manage optional services through Privacy choices in the footer.

The short version: free, in-browser music tools for learning drums and making beats. No download, no signup. Ad-supported so it can stay free.

Privacy choices

Essential storage keeps your account secure and remembers practice settings. Optional services are your choice.
