Your Very First Beat
The simplest possible groove: one sound per beat. You'll build hand-and-foot coordination with a hi-hat on every beat, a kick on 1, and a snare on 3. If you have never sat at a kit before, start here.
Play it yourself — keyboard or your own kit
Count out loud — 1, 2, 3, 4 — and tap the closed hi-hat once on every number. Four even hits, slow and relaxed. This is your built-in metronome.
Now add the kick drum on beat 1 with your foot, landing at the exact same instant as the first hi-hat.
Add the snare on beat 3 with your hand. Kick on 1, snare on 3, hi-hat on every beat — that is a real drum groove.

What to focus on
Coordinate a single hand with the feet before adding more notes. Say 1, 2, 3, 4 at a comfortable speaking pace, and let the hi-hat mark each number. The kick starts the phrase; the snare gives you a second reference halfway through.
Build a short practice session
Play the hi-hat alone for four bars, then add the kick without changing the spacing of the hand. Add the snare only when the first two parts stay steady. If an added limb makes the hi-hat hesitate, remove that limb and rebuild the layer.
Listen, check, then progress
Listen for equally spaced hi-hat strokes and a clear return to beat 1. Finish four steady loops before increasing the tempo. Next, compare this open pulse with the backbeat lesson.
Read the final example without sound
This loop has 16 steps, with 4 steps per main beat. Count each beat as number, e, and, a. The table lists the occupied positions; every unlisted position is a rest. Start at 70 BPM or lower the control until you can follow each part.
